I've lived on this coast long enough to have opinions — strong ones — about its beaches. Fifty kilometers of Pacific shoreline, and no two bays behave the same: one is a swimming pool, the next is a surf arena, the third is where the whole town gathers at 5:40 p.m. for the daily show. Here's the honest ranking I give friends when they visit.
Playa Conchal — the one that doesn't look real
Crushed-shell sand that massages your feet, water so clear you can watch your own shadow on the bottom, and a color palette stolen from the Caribbean. Go early on weekdays, enter along the shore from Brasilito like the locals do, and bring a snorkel — the rocky point at the south end is the best free aquarium in Guanacaste.
Playa Flamingo — white sand, front-row sunsets
The coast's postcard: a long white crescent with calm-to-playful water, a world-class marina at one end and villa-covered hills behind. This is where you book the sunset sail, watch sport-fishing boats come in with the flags up, and understand why half the license plates in the parking lot are rentals that never went home.
Playa Tamarindo — the everything beach
Learn-to-surf waves on the inside, a proper point at the river mouth, and a beach town that runs from taco stand to tasting menu. Tamarindo gets called touristy by people who secretly love it here. Sunset SUP across the estuary — with a guide, the crocodiles are not a myth — is the town's most underrated hour.
Playa Avellanas & Playa Grande — for the surf-serious
Avellanas is Little Hawaii on the right swell, with a beach bar (say hi to the pigs) that belongs in a documentary. Playa Grande, a national park beach where leatherback turtles still nest, offers the cleanest barrels within an hour of your villa. Both reward dawn patrol.
The wildcards: Penca, Prieta and the Catalinas coves
North of Flamingo, a chain of small coves — Penca's mangrove-backed calm, Prieta's honey-colored curve — stay quiet even in high season. Rent a kayak or join a catamaran day out to the Catalina Islands and you'll have water like glass and, in season, mantas and turtles below you.

The real luxury of the Gold Coast isn't any single beach — it's that they're all within an hour of each other, so your week can include a turquoise swim, a surf lesson, a deserted cove and a marina sunset without repacking a bag.

Which Gold Coast beach is best for swimming with kids?
Conchal on a calm morning and Penca are the gentlest; Flamingo's south end is family-friendly most of the dry season. Always read the day — this is the open Pacific, and lifeguarded beaches are rare.
Do I need a car to beach-hop?
It's the easiest way, and the coastal road is an experience in itself. No car? Tamarindo and Flamingo have the most in-walking-distance life, and concierge outfits run day trips to the rest.
When is sunset actually good?
Trick question — it's good every night. December through April you also get the clearest horizons; September and October trade some sun for dramatic clouds that photographers love.
